Today we had a whale encounter like none other so far this trip. As we motored into Trinity Bay we saw many whales just feeding and rolling along. Then we heard a very loud slapping sound. We saw what looked like a Humpback whale in a head down position repeatedly forcefully slapping it's tail on the surface of the water. Later we would learn that this activity is called "Tail Lobbing". Whales supposedly do this in an effort to dislodge organisms that grow on their skin.
Occasionally the whale would stop to catch it's breath before resuming the lobbing:
Then the whale swam around, first on one side and then the other with it's lateral fins out of the water as if it were waving:
Eventually a "whale watching" RIB showed up. This photo showing the boat gives you an idea of the size of the whale:
The "tail lobbing" went on for at least an hour and showed no signs of ending so we finally had to move on.
