We arrived last night in pitch darkness which was a bit nerve wracking. Here you see four photos of the out-port of McCallum, taken in a clockwise direction. Like some many other out-ports, it is a small fishing village perched along the shore of an isolated cove.
Since there are no roads connecting the village to the outside world, all supplies and people are brought in by the ferry.
One of the happy residents of McCallum:
The land behind the shore is so steep that many of the buildings must have the additional support of posts. Nearly everyone has some sort of a garden --- many of them are container gardens since the ground is mostly solid rock.
A view of McCallum Harbour --- Evergreen can be seen at the floating dock:
Nearly all buildings, both old and new, are built out of wood since it is readily available.
This is the view from the McCallum government wharf:
Herman Fudge takes pride in being the dock-master and ambassador for the village when "boats from away" visit:
A different sort of ferry brings some of the more heavy cargo:
Unfortunately, the residents of McCallum have voted earlier this year (2013) to be resettled. However, protests were filed that stated that the voting was biased by some folks who had recently bought property cheap and stood the gain unfairly and significantly if the government bought them out. So, we were told that there will be another vote this autumn in which only year-round, long term residents will be able to vote. It will be very sad indeed if this beautiful town is abandoned, as so many others have been.
